What Belongs to Me Today?
There have been seasons in my life when I convinced myself I was simply being prepared.
Prepared for disappointment.
Prepared for loss.
Prepared for difficult conversations.
Prepared for the phone call I hoped would never come.
It sounded responsible.
It even felt wise.
But somewhere along the way, God gently revealed something I had never considered.
I wasn't preparing.
I was rehearsing pain.
Every "what if" became another scene my mind insisted on playing.
I imagined conversations that never happened.
I grieved outcomes that never came.
I carried burdens that didn't yet exist.
Then, if the difficult thing actually happened, I lived through it all over again.
I suffered twice.
And most of the time...
The future I feared never unfolded the way I imagined it would.
As I sat quietly with the Lord one morning, a simple question came to my heart.
"Joelle...what belongs to you today?"
Not tomorrow.
Not next month.
Not every possible outcome.
Today.
That question changed everything.
Because I realized I spend so much energy trying to prepare for roads God hasn't asked me to walk that I sometimes miss the grace He's already providing for the one beneath my feet.
When the Israelites wandered through the wilderness, God gave them manna every morning.
Just enough for that day.
Some tried to gather extra because they were afraid tomorrow might be different.
By morning, it had spoiled.
I don't think God was only teaching them about bread.
I think He was teaching them about trust.
Tomorrow's provision wasn't available today.
Neither is tomorrow's grace.
Jesus later echoed that same truth when He said,
"Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:34)
I've realized that much of my anxiety comes from trying to solve problems God hasn't asked me to solve yet.
I want to be ready.
I don't want to be caught off guard.
I want to know exactly what I'll do if everything falls apart.
But hope doesn't prepare for the worst.
Hope prepares to trust God no matter what comes.
Those are very different ways to live.
Faith doesn't pretend difficult days won't come.
Faith simply believes that when they do, God's grace will arrive with them.
Not before.
Exactly when it's needed.
Perhaps that's why God so often asks us to follow Him one step at a time.
He isn't building our trust in the destination.
He's building our trust in the Guide.
So now, instead of asking,
"Lord, what if this happens?"
I'm learning to ask a different question.
"Father...what belongs to me today?"
Then I do that one thing.
Faithfully.
Because I am not responsible for building the road.
I am responsible for walking the one God is revealing beneath my feet.
And somehow...
That is enough.
Encouragement
If you've been living in tomorrow's fears, be gentle with yourself.
Many of us do it because we long to protect the people we love and ourselves from pain.
But your Father has never asked you to carry tomorrow before it arrives.
He has promised to meet you in it when it does.
His grace has never been late.
And it never will be.

Before you end your day, spend a few quiet moments with your Father and ask:
What burden have I been carrying today that actually belongs to tomorrow?
Where am I rehearsing fear instead of receiving today's grace?
Father, what belongs to me today, and what do I need to leave in Your hands until tomorrow?
Prayer
Father,
Forgive me for the times I have tried to carry tomorrow before You've asked me to.
Thank You that You never ask me to live on tomorrow's grace or tomorrow's strength.
Teach me to trust You one day at a time.
When my mind begins rehearsing fear, gently bring me back to the road You've placed beneath my feet today.
Help me believe that whatever tomorrow holds, You will already be there.
Thank You for Your daily provision, Your daily mercy, and Your daily presence.
Today, I choose to trust You with today.

Then faithfully do that one thing, trusting Him with everything that belongs to tomorrow.
