Whose Approval Am I Protecting?
Whose Approval Am I Protecting?
I recently found myself asking a question that wouldn't leave me alone.
Why do I sometimes work so hard to keep my promises to people...
...while treating my commitments to God as though they can wait?
How often have I said,
"I know this isn't wise..."
"I know I shouldn't be here..."
"I know God is leading me another direction..."
And yet continued anyway because...
"I already told them I would."
There is something good about being a person of integrity.
Scripture calls us to let our "yes" be yes.
But there is a difference between integrity and misplaced loyalty.
Throughout the Bible we find people wrestling with promises, vows, and the pressure to remain true to their word. Sometimes those stories end in tragedy because a foolish promise was treated as more important than wisdom and obedience.
Then we meet Peter and the apostles.
When they were commanded to stop speaking about Jesus, they answered,
"We must obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29)
Those words reveal a simple but life-changing truth.
Our highest loyalty has never been to human approval.
It has always been to God.
Sometimes I wonder if we sacrifice our peace with God because we're trying to prove ourselves trustworthy to people.
We fear disappointing others.
We fear looking inconsistent.
We fear letting someone down.
Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit is quietly whispering,
"Come this way instead."
Friend, if keeping your promise to people requires ignoring God's leading, it may be time to ask a deeper question.
Who am I trying to please?
God never asks us to become unreliable.
But He does ask us to place His voice above every other voice.
Sometimes that means having difficult conversations.
Sometimes it means admitting we were wrong.
Sometimes it means changing direction because we've become convinced God is leading us somewhere else.
That isn't a lack of integrity.
That is obedience.
The greatest promise you have ever made was not to another person.
It was your surrender to Christ.
Don't sacrifice that relationship in an effort to preserve every expectation someone else has placed upon you.
Because the peace that comes from walking with God is worth more than the approval that comes from pleasing people.
Encouragement
If you realize today that you've been living more for the approval of people than the pleasure of God, don't let that discourage you.
Let it become an invitation.
Our Father is wonderfully patient.
He gently redirects His children, not to shame them, but to lead them into the freedom of wholehearted obedience.
❤️ Heart Audit
Where am I protecting someone's approval more than I'm protecting my fellowship with God?
Is there a commitment I need to prayerfully re-evaluate because God is leading me differently?
Whose voice has been shaping my decisions most this week—people's expectations or God's invitation?
Prayer
Father, thank You for being patient with me when I allow the opinions and expectations of others to become louder than Your voice. Teach me to value obedience more than approval and faithfulness to You above every other loyalty. Give me the courage to follow where You lead, even when it requires difficult conversations or misunderstood decisions. Help me become a person whose greatest desire is to honor You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tomorrow's Invitation
Tomorrow, before saying "yes" to any new commitment, pause and ask one simple question:
"Does this move me closer to God's will, or farther from it?"
Then trust that obedience to Him is never the wrong decision.
Anchor Truth
The greatest act of integrity is not keeping every promise to people. It is remaining faithful to the God who called you.
