When You Go Back
Even when you go back… Jesus is still waiting on the shore.
🌊 When You Go Back
The nets felt heavier than they used to.
Maybe it was the guilt.
Maybe the exhaustion.
Or maybe they really were heavier — weighted down with shame, regret, and a whole lot of what now?
Peter's fingers were raw again.
The coarse rope cut across his palms just like it had before he ever met Jesus.
Before miracles.
Before walking on water.
Before promises made and broken.
Before denials.
The wind off the lake hadn’t changed.
The boat still creaked the same.
But Peter wasn’t the same — and that was the worst part.
Because after all that time walking with Jesus, he’d hoped he never could go back.
But here he was.
Back to the boat.
Back to the old life.
Back to the beginning.
He had told the others,
“I’m going fishing.”
Maybe because it was the only thing he knew how to do.
Maybe because he needed to feel in control of something — anything — again.
And without even arguing, the others followed him.
That stung more than it should have.
They had seen him fail.
They had heard what he did.
And still… they followed.
But Peter knew the truth.
They weren’t following a leader.
They were following a man who didn’t know what else to do.
They fished all night.
Nothing.
Just like before.
Just like the first time Jesus had ever stepped into his boat.
Peter almost laughed — a bitter, hollow laugh.
Like the lake was in on the joke.
Like it was mocking him.
You thought you could lead?
You thought you could start again?
The silence on the boat was thick.
Then… the voice.
From the shore.
Faint, but clear.
“Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
— John 21:5»
Peter squinted through the morning mist.
He didn’t recognize the man at first.
“No,” they called back.
“Throw your net on the right side.”
The words hit something in Peter’s chest — something buried deep but not forgotten.
He didn’t argue.
He didn’t hesitate.
The net hit the water.
And suddenly… it was full.
Overflowing.
Straining.
Alive.
And in that instant… Peter knew.
“It is the Lord!”
Before anyone could move, he was in the water.
Clothes and all.
Sprinting through the sea like it would part for him.
Not because he deserved to stand in front of Jesus —
but because he couldn’t not.
The shame didn’t matter anymore.
The failure didn’t hold him back.
The past didn’t drown him.
The only thing that mattered… was Jesus.
And when he reached the shore?
There was no lecture.
No “I told you so.”
Just a fire.
And fish.
And bread.
“Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’”
— John 21:12
Jesus looked at him with eyes that didn’t flinch.
And said,
“Come and eat.”
Peter sat down, dripping wet, heart pounding.
He couldn’t look Jesus in the eye — not yet.
But Jesus didn’t push.
He just served.
And waited.
Until Peter was ready.
And then came the question.
“Do you love Me?”
Peter blinked.
“Yes, Lord. You know I do.”
Three times the question.
Three times the answer.
Three times to cover the three denials.
And after each answer, Jesus didn’t say,
“Then prove it.”
He said,
“Feed My sheep.”
And then finally…
“Follow Me.”
— John 21:19
And this time?
Peter followed.
Not because he was perfect.
Because he was restored.
Because the same voice that called him from his shame
called him into his purpose.
Because grace isn’t just forgiveness —
it’s a second calling.
Maybe you’ve gone back to your old life.
Maybe you’ve slipped into habits that feel too familiar.
Maybe you’ve told yourself that the dreams God once gave you don’t matter anymore.
Maybe you’ve failed.
But Jesus is still standing on the shore.
Still cooking breakfast.
Still calling your name.
He hasn’t given up on you.
Don’t you give up on you either.
📖 Scripture
"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning."
— Lamentations 3:22–23
💭 Reflection
Where have you gone back… that Jesus may be calling you forward from?
🙏 Prayer
Jesus, I’ve gone back to what I knew — not because I didn’t love You, but because I forgot who I was. Remind me. Call me from the shore like You called Peter. Feed my hungry soul and lift the shame I’ve been carrying. Thank You for still wanting me. Thank You for offering more than forgiveness — You give purpose. Help me follow You again. Amen.
