When I Finally Stopped Explaining

When I Finally Stopped Explaining

Have you ever walked into prayer carrying a question you desperately wanted God to answer?

I have.

Usually it begins with something I never saw coming.

A conversation.

A loss.

A disappointment.

A decision I don't know how to make.

Life suddenly feels unfamiliar, and before I know it, I've opened my Bible, bowed my head, and started talking.

I tell God everything.

What happened.

How I feel.

Why I think this is unfair.

What I believe should happen next.

What I'm afraid of.

What I hope He'll do.

Then somewhere in the middle of my prayer, I ask,

"Lord...what should I do?"

It sounds like I'm seeking His will.

But recently, God gently exposed something in my own heart.

I wasn't only seeking His wisdom.

I was also trying to solve the problem while I prayed.

I would read Scripture looking for confirmation of what I had already decided.

I would imagine every possible outcome.

I'd prepare for every worst-case scenario.

I'd plead my case before God as though if I explained it well enough, maybe He would agree with me.

Then one morning, I realized something.

I was talking far more than I was listening.

I called it seeking.

But much of it was simply worrying out loud.

That realization humbled me.

So this time, I decided to try something different.

Instead of bringing God my conclusion...

I simply brought Him my question.

"Father...where do I go from here?"

Then I stopped.

Not because I suddenly had peace.

Not because all my questions disappeared.

But because I finally realized that if I truly believed He was my Shepherd, I needed to give Him room to lead.

Psalm 32 says,

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you."

Notice who is doing the leading.

God isn't asking me to discover the path on my own.

He's asking me to walk with the One who already knows it.

I wonder how often we mistake talking to God for listening to God.

We ask for guidance while quietly hoping God will bless the plan we've already begun creating.

We seek His approval more than His direction.

Friend, faith isn't pretending you don't have questions.

Faith is bringing those questions honestly to the Father and trusting Him enough to wait for His answer.

Sometimes His direction comes quickly.

Sometimes it unfolds one faithful step at a time.

Either way, He is never in a hurry.

He isn't anxious about your future.

He isn't scrambling to figure out your next step.

He already sees the road long before you do.

Perhaps that's why He invites us to walk with Him instead of running ahead of Him.

Because His greatest desire isn't simply to show us the way.

It's to walk it with us.

Encouragement

If you're facing something today that has left you confused, don't rush to fill the silence with your own answers.

Your Father is not intimidated by your questions.

He welcomes them.

Bring Him your whole heart.

Then give yourself permission to be still long enough to hear His.

The Shepherd has never lost one of His sheep because they walked too slowly beside Him.

❤️ Heart Audit

Before you end your day, ask your Father:

  1. Am I truly seeking Your direction, or am I asking You to bless my own plan?

  2. Where have fear and the need to control become louder than my willingness to listen?

  3. What would it look like today to trust that You can guide me one faithful step at a time?

Prayer

Father,

Forgive me for the times I've mistaken worrying in Your presence for trusting You.

Thank You that You patiently listen to every fear, every question, and every uncertainty I bring before You.

Teach me not only to pray but to listen.

Give me the humility to lay down my own conclusions and the faith to receive Your direction, even when it unfolds more slowly than I would like.

Help me trust that You are never late, never confused, and never uncertain about the path ahead.

I don't want to simply ask You to bless my plans.

I want to walk in Yours.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

📖 See for Yourself

Read Psalm 32:8–9 and John 10:1–18.

As you read, notice how God describes Himself.

Is He primarily giving directions...

Or is He inviting you into a relationship with the One who leads?

Ask yourself:

"What does this passage reveal about the kind of Guide God wants to be?"

I'd love to hear what God reveals to you as you spend time in His Word.

Tomorrow's Invitation

Tomorrow, before asking God for all the answers, ask Him one simple question:

"Father...what is my next faithful step?"

Then resist the urge to solve tomorrow.

Simply take the step He places in front of you today.

Anchor Truth

God is not asking you to figure out the road ahead. He's inviting you to walk with the One who already knows it.
