Growth Doesnt Exepmt You From the Storm
Growth Doesn't Exempt You From the Storm
Have you ever looked back over your walk with Christ and smiled?
Not because you've become perfect.
But because you can honestly see that God has changed you.
You read Scripture differently than you once did.
You pray differently.
You respond differently.
The things that once tempted you don't have the same hold they used to.
You begin to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in your life and quietly think,
"Lord...thank You. I'm not who I used to be."
I don't believe that's pride.
I believe that's gratitude.
It's beautiful to recognize the transforming work of God.
But recently I discovered something hiding beneath that gratitude that I didn't know was there.
Life hit me in a way I never expected.
And before I could stop myself, another thought rose to the surface.
"God...why?"
"I've been faithful."
"I've been seeking You."
"I've been studying Your Word."
"I've tried to honor You."
"I don't understand."
That question revealed something in my heart I hadn't seen before.
Somewhere along the journey, I had quietly begun believing that spiritual growth would somehow protect me from deep suffering.
Not because I would have said it out loud.
But because my disappointment exposed what my heart had been expecting.
Then I thought about the people Scripture calls faithful.
Joseph.
Ruth.
David.
Paul.
None of their faithfulness kept them from hardship.
It prepared them to remain faithful in the middle of it.
Even Jesus—the only perfectly obedient One—was not spared suffering.
If obedience didn't remove the cross from Christ's path, why would I expect it to remove every trial from mine?
That realization didn't discourage me.
It freed me.
Because my relationship with God was never built on a contract that said,
"If I obey, nothing painful will happen."
It was built on a promise.
"I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Those are two very different things.
God never promised a life without storms.
He promised His presence in every storm.
Perhaps spiritual maturity isn't reaching a place where life can no longer shake us.
Perhaps it's reaching a place where, even when life shakes us, we still know where to run.
Growth isn't measured by the absence of pain.
It's measured by the direction of our heart when pain comes.
And every storm becomes another opportunity to discover that the God who transformed us yesterday is still faithful today.
Encouragement
If you're walking through something that doesn't make sense, don't assume God has abandoned you or that your growth has somehow failed.
The very roots you've been growing in Christ may be the reason you're still standing.
God isn't disappointed that you're hurting.
He is inviting you to lean into the faithfulness He has been building in you all along.
❤️ Heart Audit
Before you end your day, spend a few quiet moments with your Father and ask:
1. Have I quietly expected my obedience to protect me from suffering?
2. When life became painful, what did my first reaction reveal about where I was placing my confidence?
3. How is God inviting me to trust His presence today instead of expecting an explanation?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the work You have done in my life.
Every step of growth is evidence of Your grace, not my greatness.
Forgive me for the times I've expected my faithfulness to earn me a life without hardship.
Teach me to rejoice in the progress You have made in me while remembering that my confidence has always been in Your character.
When suffering comes, remind me that You have not changed.
Strengthen my faith, deepen my trust, and help me cling to Your promises even when I cannot understand Your purposes.
Thank You that Your presence never depends on my circumstances.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
📖 See for Yourself
Read John 16:33 and 2 Corinthians 4:7–18.
As you read, notice that Jesus promises trouble in this world, yet also promises His peace.
Then notice how Paul describes suffering—not as evidence that God has abandoned him, but as a place where God's power is displayed.
Ask yourself:
"What do these passages reveal about what spiritual maturity really looks like?"
I'd love to hear what God reveals to you.
Tomorrow's Invitation
Tomorrow, thank God for one area where you've seen Him grow you.
Then thank Him for something harder:
That His faithfulness is not measured by an easy life, but by His unchanging presence in every season.
Anchor Truth
Spiritual growth doesn't exempt you from the storm. It prepares you to recognize that God is still with you when the storm arrives.
