The God Who Moved In
The God Who Moved In
Sometimes I wonder if we have become so familiar with certain truths that we've stopped marveling at them.
One of those truths is the Holy Spirit.
We talk about the Holy Spirit.
We pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us.
We ask the Holy Spirit to comfort us.
But have we ever stopped to consider what it actually means that the Holy Spirit lives within every believer?
Not an angel.
Not merely a feeling.
Not just a force.
God Himself.
The same Spirit who hovered over the waters of creation.
The same Spirit who empowered the prophets.
The same Spirit who descended upon Jesus.
The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead.
Lives within you.
Sit with that for a moment.
When I was journaling recently, I found myself thanking God for something I hadn't thanked Him for very often.
His "no."
I thanked Him for the prayers He lovingly refused to answer.
For the doors He chose not to open.
For the desires He was patiently reshaping.
Then another thought filled my heart with gratitude.
I thanked Him for the opportunities He gives me to recognize that He is changing me.
Not because I've become perfect.
Far from it.
But because I sometimes find myself responding differently than I once would have.
I recognize conviction more quickly.
I turn back to God sooner.
I find myself desiring what pleases Him more than what simply pleases me.
Those moments don't make me proud.
They make me grateful.
Because they remind me that God is doing exactly what He promised He would do.
He is transforming me from the inside out.
For years, I thought spiritual maturity meant becoming stronger.
Trying harder.
Being more disciplined.
Doing better.
Now I wonder if spiritual maturity is something much simpler.
Learning to trust the One who already lives within me.
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He made an incredible promise to His disciples.
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth."
— John 14:16–17
God didn't simply forgive us and send us on our way.
He made His home within us.
What an astonishing thought.
The Christian life has never been about becoming a better version of ourselves.
It has always been about Christ being formed within us.
The Holy Spirit gently convicts us when we wander.
He reminds us of God's truth when we forget.
He produces fruit we could never manufacture on our own.
He gives peace that doesn't make sense.
Strength when ours is gone.
Wisdom when we don't know what to do.
Courage to obey.
And humility to repent when we fail.
No, we will never be perfect this side of heaven.
There will still be days we stumble.
There will still be moments when we choose poorly.
But there is a beautiful difference between the person trying to become holy alone...
and the person who is learning to walk with the Holy Spirit.
One strives.
The other surrenders.
One depends on willpower.
The other depends on God's presence.
Paul reminds us:
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"
— 1 Corinthians 6:19
The Holy Spirit is not simply helping you become a better person.
He is shaping you to resemble Christ.
Every time you choose forgiveness over bitterness...
Truth over deception...
Peace over panic...
Obedience over compromise...
He is reminding you whose child you are.
The greatest miracle is not that we occasionally experience God.
The greatest miracle is that God chose to make His dwelling place within His people.
So today, don't ask,
"Can I trust myself?"
Ask a better question.
"Am I learning to trust the Holy Spirit who faithfully lives within me?"
Because your confidence has never rested in your ability to get everything right.
It rests in the God who loved you enough not only to forgive you...
but to remain with you.
And the more you learn to trust His Spirit...
the more your life will begin to resemble the heart of the One who moved in.
Thought for Today
The Christian life is not about trying harder to become like Christ. It is about learning to trust the Holy Spirit, who is faithfully shaping you into His likeness.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the incredible gift of Your Holy Spirit. Thank You for not only forgiving me but choosing to dwell within me. Help me trust Your Spirit more than I trust my own understanding. When I am tempted to rely on my own strength, remind me that You are with me, guiding me, convicting me, comforting me, and transforming me from the inside out. May my life increasingly reflect the heart of Jesus because I have learned to follow the One who lives within me. In His name, Amen.
Reflection Question
In what area of my life am I still relying on my own strength instead of trusting the Holy Spirit who already lives within me?
