Wanting What God Already Promised
Sometimes the very thing we ask God for is found in simply obeying what He has already said.
🌿 Wanting What God Already Promised
In the very first book of the Bible, we are introduced to the first sin and the first lie spoken by Satan.
Genesis 3:5 records the moment the serpent speaks to Eve:
“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
As I read that verse recently, something struck me in a way it never had before.
I realized that I pray for that very thing almost every day.
I pray that God will make me look more like Him and less like me.
I pray for wisdom, knowledge, and discernment.
I ask Him to help me recognize evil so I can avoid it.
And in that moment, I found myself thinking:
I understand why Eve would want that.
Because I want that too.
Wanting to know the difference between good and evil isn’t a bad desire.
Wanting to grow in wisdom isn’t wrong.
Wanting to look more like God is actually what we are called to do.
But the deeper realization came quickly.
Eve didn’t fall because she wanted something bad.
She fell because she chose to pursue something God had already said no to.
🌳 When God Says No
God had been clear.
There were thousands of trees in the garden they could enjoy freely.
But there was one tree that came with a clear instruction.
Do not eat from it.
It wasn’t hidden.
It wasn’t confusing.
It wasn’t complicated.
God said no.
And when God says no, He means no.
Satan didn’t introduce Eve to a brand-new desire.
Instead, he twisted something that already existed in her heart.
He made it sound good.
Reasonable.
Even beneficial.
You’ll be like God.
And that’s how deception often works.
It rarely comes wrapped in something obviously evil.
It usually comes disguised as something that sounds wise, empowering, or even spiritual.
But wanting something good doesn’t make disobedience right.
đź“– If We Truly Want to Be Like Him
If we truly want to become more like God… then we follow His instructions.
If we truly want wisdom… then we trust His commands.
If we truly want to recognize good and evil… then we listen when He tells us what they are.
The truth is, God wasn’t withholding something good from Eve.
He was protecting her from something she wasn’t meant to carry yet.
And in many ways, our lives still reflect that same choice.
We pray for wisdom.
We pray for discernment.
We pray to look more like Him.
But sometimes the very thing that will make us more like Him is simply learning to trust His instructions.
To do what He says to do.
And to stop doing what He says not to do.
Not because we understand every reason behind it.
But because we trust the One who gave the instruction.
Jesus said it plainly:
“If you love me, keep my commands.”
— John 14:15
Following God isn’t complicated.
It isn’t always easy.
But it is clear.
And maybe the path to looking more like Him isn’t found in gaining more knowledge first.
Maybe it begins with something much simpler.
Obedience.
đź’ Reflection
Are there areas in your life where you are asking God for wisdom while still resisting an instruction He has already made clear?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your Word and the clarity of Your instructions. Help me not to chase wisdom apart from obedience. Give me a heart that trusts You enough to follow what You have already said, even when I do not understand every reason. Shape my life to reflect You more each day. Amen.
👣 Practical Step
Ask God today to reveal one area where obedience may be more important than gaining more understanding—and take one step toward aligning your actions with His Word.
