The Bricks We Speak
Every word is a brick—and every day we decide what we’re building with them.
📖 Scripture
“The tongue has the power of life and death…”
— Proverbs 18:21
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…”
— Ephesians 4:29
📘 Bible Study
The construction site was quiet for just a moment.
It was early—just before the noise of the day would begin. The ground was still damp from the morning dew, and the air carried that earthy smell of dirt and dust. Stacks of bricks sat neatly arranged on wooden pallets, waiting to be used.
I watched as one of the workers walked over, picked up a single brick, and placed it carefully on top of another.
Then another.
And another.
Slowly, intentionally, he began building a wall.
There was nothing rushed about it.
No wasted movement.
No careless placement.
Each brick mattered.
Each one had a purpose.
Each one was placed with intention because he knew something I was just beginning to understand:
What you build depends on how you place what’s in your hands.
As I stood there watching, a thought settled deep in my heart.
Our words are bricks.
Every single one of them.
And every day, we speak thousands of them.
Some studies say between 13,000 and 16,000 words a day.
Thousands of bricks.
And with each one, we are building something.
The question is—what?
Because every word we speak does one of two things:
It either lands on our head…
or it builds a platform beneath our feet.
It either weighs us down…
or lifts us up.
It either crushes…
or creates.
And the truth is, words are one of the most powerful tools we have.
They are free to use.
But they come at a cost.
They determine the direction of our lives more than we realize.
Life and death.
That means our words are never neutral.
They are always doing something.
Building…
or breaking.
Blessing…
or cursing.
If I’m honest, there have been seasons in my life where I used my words carelessly.
Spoke without thinking.
Reacted instead of responding.
Said things I didn’t mean—or worse, things I did mean in the wrong moment.
And I’ve also been on the receiving end of words that weren’t spoken in love.
Words that lingered longer than they should have.
Words that tried to define me.
And if I’m being completely honest… there were times I allowed those words to become my truth.
I picked them up.
Held onto them.
And stacked them on my own head.
Brick after brick.
Until I felt the weight of them pressing down on who I believed I was.
But God never intended for us to live under the weight of words that tear down.
He calls us to something different.
Building up.
Not piling on.
Not weighing down.
Not tearing apart.
Building.
Because the same mouth that can speak destruction can also speak life.
Encouragement.
Hope.
Truth.
Love.
And not just over others—but over ourselves.
So today, I want to challenge you to pause.
To really think about the thousands—yes, thousands—of words you will speak today.
Where are you placing them?
Are you stacking them on your own head with doubt, negativity, and fear?
Are you placing them on someone else, weighing them down with criticism or careless comments?
Or are you using them to build?
To lay a foundation.
To create something strong, steady, and life-giving.
Because every word is a brick.
And over time, those bricks become a structure.
A life.
A mindset.
A relationship.
A future.
So be intentional.
Choose your words carefully.
Speak life where it’s needed.
Speak truth where there has been confusion.
Speak love where there has been hurt.
Because you are holding one of the most powerful tools you’ve been given.
And today…
You get to decide what you build with it.
💭 Reflection
What kind of structure are your words building right now—over your own life and over the people around you?
❓ A Question for You
Are your words becoming a platform beneath your feet—or a weight on your head?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, help me become more aware of the words I speak. Teach me to use them with wisdom, love, and intention. Keep me from speaking carelessly over myself or others, and let my words become tools that build, bless, and bring life. Amen.
👣 Practical Step
Today, pause before speaking in one difficult moment and ask yourself:
Will these words build—or break?
