Obedience… or Just Sacrifice?
Sometimes what we call sacrifice… isn’t actually obedience.
🤍 Obedience… or Just Sacrifice?
This morning my prayers didn’t come out as statements.
They came out as questions.
“God…
are You asking me to obey You more…
and stop sacrificing myself?”
That one sat heavy.
Because sometimes what we call sacrifice…
isn’t actually obedience.
Sometimes it’s people-pleasing.
Sometimes it’s fear.
Sometimes it’s trying to prove something.
Sometimes it’s doing what looks right…
without ever asking God if it is right.
So I asked Him again:
“Am I truly sacrificing for You…
or am I doing things in vain?
Am I doing them for others…
more than I’m doing them for You?”
And then the question that really matters:
“God… where do I need to be more obedient to You?”
Not more busy.
Not more helpful.
Not more impressive.
More obedient.
🌿 What Obedience Really Looks Like
Because obedience isn’t always loud.
Sometimes it looks like:
✨ Saying no when you used to say yes
✨ Being still when you want to act
✨ Speaking when it would be easier to stay quiet
✨ Letting go when you want to hold on
Obedience doesn’t always feel like sacrifice.
But sometimes… sacrifice isn’t obedience at all.
“To obey is better than sacrifice…”
— 1 Samuel 15:22
God isn’t asking for everything we can give.
He’s asking for what He asked for.
And there’s a difference.
👂 The Quiet Answer
So I kept praying…
“What does obedience look like for me, right now?
How do I do that?”
And the answer wasn’t complicated.
It was familiar.
Quiet.
Clear.
“Listen to My voice.”
“Remember.”
“Do not ignore My commandments.”
“Hear Me when I speak.”
God isn’t confusing.
We just get distracted.
We fill our lives with noise, responsibility, expectation…
and somewhere in the middle of all of it…
We stop listening.
But obedience begins there.
Not in doing more.
In listening more.
“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”
— John 10:27
They don’t run ahead.
They don’t create their own path.
They listen…
and they follow.
✨ A Gentle Heart Check
So today, maybe the question isn’t:
“What more can I do for God?”
Maybe the question is:
“Am I doing what He actually asked me to do?”
Because a life of obedience…
Isn’t built on effort.
It’s built on listening.
📖 Scripture for Today
“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
(From the hymn Trust and Obey)
💭 Thought for Today
Obedience is not doing more for God — it’s doing what He asks.
🙏 Prayer
Lord, help me quiet the noise and hear Your voice. Show me where I need to obey You more and give me the courage to follow. Amen.
✔️ Practical Step
Before saying yes to something today, pause and ask:
“God… is this obedience, or just sacrifice?”
💌 If this encouraged you, share it with someone who may be exhausted from doing for God instead of walking with Him.
