What Do You Have?
What Do You Have?
π Scripture
βHow many loaves do you have?β
β Matthew 15:34
πΏ Hook
Most of us know the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand.
It's one of the most talked about miracles in Scripture.
A crowd gathers.
The people are hungry.
The disciples don't know what to do.
And Jesus takes five loaves and two fish and multiplies them to feed thousands.
It's an incredible display of God's provision.
But this week, I found myself drawn to a different feeding miracle.
The feeding of the four thousand.
And as I read it, something stood out to me that I had never really noticed before.
In the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus asks what can be found.
The disciples discover a boy who has food.
The miracle begins with what someone else is willing to offer.
But in the feeding of the four thousand, Jesus asks a different question.
βHow many loaves do you have?β
β Matthew 15:34
Not what can you find.
Not what can you borrow.
Not what does someone else have.
What do you have?
That question stopped me.
Because isn't that often what God asks us?
β€οΈ Heart
It's easy to look around and think:
"If I had more money, I could help."
"If I had more time, I could serve."
"If I had more knowledge, I could teach."
"If I had more influence, I could make a difference."
But God rarely begins with what we don't have.
He begins with what we do have.
A little time.
A little faith.
A little courage.
A little generosity.
A little obedience.
The disciples answered Jesus:
"Seven loaves, and a few small fish."
Not much.
Certainly not enough to feed four thousand people.
But Jesus wasn't asking them to provide enough.
He was asking them to provide what they had.
And I think that's where many of us miss the blessing.
Because it's much easier to point to what others should give.
It's easier to see what someone else could contribute.
It's easier to believe God can use their gifts.
Their resources.
Their talents.
Their obedience.
But Jesus is still asking the same question today:
What do you have?
Because God has always been in the business of multiplying what is surrendered.
He blessed the loaves.
He blessed the fish.
And He multiplied them.
The miracle didn't happen before the disciples gave what they had.
The miracle happened after.
And perhaps that's true in our lives as well.
Maybe we're waiting for God to multiply something we haven't yet surrendered.
Maybe we're asking Him to bless something we're still holding tightly.
Maybe He's simply waiting for us to place it in His hands.
Because what feels small to us is never small to God.
A small act of kindness.
A small gift.
A small step of obedience.
A small amount of faith.
Placed in the hands of Jesus...
Can become far more than we ever imagined.
β¨ Takeaway
God never asks you to provide the miracle.
He asks you to provide what you have.
The size of your gift is not what matters.
The willingness of your heart is.
What feels insignificant in your hands becomes significant in His.
π± Action Step
Take a few minutes today and make a list of what God has already placed in your hands.
Your gifts.
Your experiences.
Your resources.
Your opportunities.
Your relationships.
Then prayerfully ask:
"Lord, what have I been holding back from You?"
Choose one thing and intentionally place it in His hands today.
π Prayer
Lord, help me stop focusing on what I lack and trust You with what I have. Give me the courage to place my gifts, resources, talents, and obedience into Your hands. Teach me to surrender what seems small and trust You to multiply it for Your glory. Help me stop comparing my offering to someone else's and simply give You what You've already entrusted to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
π¬ Reflection Question
What has God already placed in my hands that I have been overlooking, minimizing, or withholding from Him?
