“I Am the Lord’s Servant” — Trusting God When Nothing Makes Sense
Mary didn’t understand God’s plan — but she trusted His character. What would change if we did the same?
📖 Scripture:
Luke 1:38 (NIV)
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”
Luke 1:37 (NIV)
“For no word from God will ever fail.”
📝 Bible Study: “I Am the Lord’s Servant” — Learning to Trust Like Mary
I think about Mary a lot during Christmas—not the picture-book version of her, not the statues or the paintings, but the real Mary.
A teenage girl in an ordinary town, living an ordinary life, when suddenly the extraordinary walked right into her room.
One moment she was going about her day, and the next she was staring at an angel delivering a message that would change the entire world—and her entire life.
And yet… she trusted.
We read her words so casually:
“I am the Lord’s servant… may your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)
But those words weren’t simple.
They were courage.
They were surrender.
They were a kind of trust most of us spend a lifetime trying to learn.
What made Mary say yes?
Was it the angel’s reassurance?
“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:30)
Or was it the promise?
“For no word from God will ever fail.” (Luke 1:37)
Maybe it was the greeting that stunned her before anything else:
“Greetings, you who are highly favored!” (Luke 1:28)
Whatever phrase reached her heart first, something inside Mary recognized God’s character.
She didn’t understand the plan.
She didn’t know how it would work.
She didn’t have answers for the questions that would come.
But she knew God.
And knowing God—His goodness, His faithfulness, His integrity—was enough.
The Cost Behind the Calling
Saying “yes” to God didn’t make Mary’s life easier.
In many ways, it made her life harder.
People whispered.
Family members questioned.
Friends doubted.
Joseph wrestled.
And Mary still said, “I am the Lord’s servant.”
Her faith didn’t remove the cost.
Her faith carried her through the cost.
Mary’s Yes… and Ours
Every day, God asks something of us.
Not through angels appearing in our living rooms,
but through scripture,
conviction,
opportunity,
and quiet moments when the Holy Spirit whispers to our hearts.
And like Mary, we have a choice.
This Christmas, Mary reminds us that the real blessing isn’t in understanding God’s plan.
The blessing is in trusting His character.
She didn’t say,
“I understand.”
She didn’t say,
“I agree.”
She didn’t say,
“I feel ready.”
She simply said:
“I am the Lord’s servant.”
What a beautiful, bold, life-changing sentence.
A Christmas Invitation
This Christmas, let’s be a little more like Mary.
Let’s trust God’s word more than our fear.
Let’s lean into His character even when the outcome is unknown.
Let’s believe that “no word from God will ever fail.”
And let’s have the courage to say:
“I am the Lord’s servant.
Whatever You ask, wherever You lead—yes, Lord.”
💬 Reflection Question:
Where is God asking you to trust His character, even though you don’t yet understand His plan?
🙏 Prayer:
Lord, give me Mary’s courage.
Teach me to trust Your character when I cannot see Your plan.
Help me surrender my fear, my timelines, and my questions to You.
Let my heart echo her words: “I am the Lord’s servant.”
Strengthen me to follow You with faith that says yes even when I don’t have the details.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
✅ Practical Step:
Today, write down one area of your life that feels uncertain — then speak Mary’s words over it:
“I am the Lord’s servant. May Your word to me be fulfilled.”
🤝 Invite a Friend:
If this encouraged your heart today, share it with someone who needs the reminder that trusting God doesn’t require understanding the full plan — only knowing His character.
