Forty — What God Forms in Hidden Seasons

What if 40 isn’t random… but a pattern of preparation?

🌿 Forty

The number 40 in the Bible is never random.

It marks preparation.
It marks testing.
It marks transformation.

The rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights in the days of Noah (Genesis 7:12).

Moses was on Mount Sinai with God for 40 days and 40 nights (Exodus 24:18).

The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years (Numbers 14:33–34).

Elijah traveled 40 days to Horeb, the mountain of God (1 Kings 19:8).

And Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days before beginning His ministry (Matthew 4:2).

Forty has always been a number of preparation before promise.
A stretching before a sending.
A refining before a revealing.

But this week, something struck me that I had never really considered before.

A normal pregnancy is 40 weeks.

Forty weeks.

In forty weeks, God takes something microscopic — a single sperm and a single egg — and forms a human being in His likeness.

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image…’” — Genesis 1:26

If you’ve ever been pregnant or walked closely with someone who has, you know the miracle of it.

At first, it’s the size of a pea.
Then an egg.
Then a small melon.
Tiny fingers forming. Eyelids. A heartbeat you can hear before you can see.

Week by week, something invisible becomes undeniable.

And it doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens slowly. Intentionally. Carefully.

God is not rushed in the womb.

So why do we expect Him to rush in us?

🌾 Forty Days

It is no accident that Lent is 40 days.

For 40 days, we remember the wilderness.
For 40 days, we remember the road to the cross.
For 40 days, we intentionally fix our hearts on Jesus.

We pause.
We fast.
We reflect.
We surrender.

And if we commit to it — it works.

Every year when I begin a Lent study, I am amazed at what God can do with a willing heart in just 40 days.
Not because I am strong.
But because He is faithful.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

He never ignores a willing heart.

But here’s what He showed me:

If God can form a baby in 40 weeks…
If He can transform a wandering people in 40 years…
If Jesus can prepare for ministry in 40 days…

Think about what He can do with your life if you give Him sustained time.

Not rushed time.
Not leftover time.
Not emergency-only time.

Intentional time.

🌱 Spiritual Development Takes Time

Just like a baby, we don’t start full grown.

We begin small.

“Like newborn infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” — 1 Peter 2:2

A newborn survives on milk.
But if that baby never moves beyond milk, something is wrong.

The same is true for us.

We cannot survive spiritually on:

“Jesus loves me.”
“God is good.”
A Sunday sermon.
A quick devotional.

Those are milk.

Good. Necessary. Beautiful.

But growth requires more.

Hebrews 5:12–14 reminds us that there comes a time when believers must move from milk to solid food — learning discernment, obedience, maturity.

Spiritual growth is developmental.

It is layered.
It is progressive.
It is patient.

And just like pregnancy, it often feels slow while something miraculous is forming beneath the surface.

The Invitation

So what if this Lent isn’t just about giving something up?

What if it’s about letting something grow?

What if these 40 days are the early weeks of something God wants to fully form in you?

And what if — instead of rushing Him — you became patient with the process?

Think about how we celebrate pregnancy:

We track the weeks.
We celebrate milestones.
We take pictures.
We journal symptoms.
We anticipate growth.

What if we tracked our spiritual growth the same way?

Week 1: I surrendered this.
Week 2: I forgave this.
Week 3: I recognized this idol.
Week 4: I responded to the Spirit instead of my ego.

What if we honored the small developments?

Because small growth becomes undeniable transformation.

💛 If He Can Create Life…

If God can create a human life in 40 weeks,
He can reshape your heart in 40 days.

If He can form bones and breath and personality in secret,
He can form patience, obedience, courage, and faith in you.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 1:6

He is not finished with you.

But you must remain in Him.

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself.” — John 15:4

Babies don’t grow disconnected from nourishment.

Neither do we.

💭 Reflection

What might God be quietly forming in you during this season that you’ve been tempted to rush?

🙏 Prayer

Father, help me trust Your timing. Teach me patience in seasons that feel slow. Form in me what only You can shape. Grow my faith beneath the surface, and give me grace to celebrate small progress. I surrender the pace to You. Amen.

👣 Practical Step

Track your growth this week. Each evening, write one sentence about where you saw spiritual development — even if it felt small.

💌 Invite a Friend

Forward this to someone walking through a waiting season. Remind them that hidden growth is still holy growth.
