Faithful, Not Regret-Proof
I think I finally understand why so many of us are exhausted.
We aren't just carrying today's decisions.
We're carrying tomorrow's possible regrets.
Every day.
We replay conversations that haven't happened.
We worry about outcomes we can't control.
We try to make the one decision that guarantees we won't look back someday and wish we had chosen differently.
That is an impossible burden.
Because God has never asked us to make regret-proof decisions.
He has asked us to make faithful ones.
Those are radically different.
A regret-proof decision assumes we can see the future.
A faithful decision trusts the One who already can.
Sometimes we become so afraid of making the wrong choice that we stop living altogether.
We overanalyze.
We hesitate.
We wait for absolute certainty that never comes.
Not because we don't trust God...
But because we're trying to protect ourselves from future pain.
Yet Scripture never promises that faithfulness eliminates painful outcomes.
In fact, it tells the opposite story.
Jesus was perfectly faithful.
He still went to the cross.
Paul was faithful.
He still sat in prison.
Daniel was faithful.
He still spent a night in the lions' den.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were faithful.
They still walked into the fire.
Faithfulness has never been God's promise that life will be easy.
It has always been His invitation to trust Him no matter where obedience leads.
That changes the question I want to ask myself.
Instead of asking,
"What decision will I never regret?"
I want to ask,
"What decision is most faithful to God?"
Because I may not control the outcome.
I may experience disappointment.
I may not understand His timing.
I may even walk through seasons I never would have chosen.
But I would rather walk through suffering with God...
than comfort without Him.
The older I get, the more I realize that my greatest regret would not be choosing the harder road.
It would be choosing a path that led me away from the One who has always been faithful to me.
Faithfulness doesn't protect us from painful outcomes.
It protects us from facing them alone.
And perhaps that's the freedom we've been searching for all along.
Not the freedom of knowing the future.
But the freedom of knowing the One who holds it.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
— Proverbs 3:5–6
Thought for Today
God has never asked you to make regret-proof decisions.
He has asked you to make faithful ones.
Prayer
Lord, free me from the burden of trying to predict every outcome and protect myself from every possible regret. Help me stop measuring my decisions by fear and start measuring them by faithfulness. Teach me to trust You with tomorrow while walking obediently with You today. When I cannot see the road ahead, remind me that I know the One who does. Give me the courage to follow You, wherever You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.
