Preparing for the unknown

Preparing for the Unknown

I heard a quote recently from James Clear that caught my attention:

"The ultimate form of preparation is not planning for a specific scenario but a mindset that can handle uncertainty."

I thought…

That's really good.

But then my mind immediately went somewhere else.

What would this look like biblically?

And before I even realized it, I found myself rewording it:

The ultimate form of preparation is not planning for a specific outcome, but cultivating a faith-filled mind and heart that can walk with God through any uncertainty.

Sorry, Mr. Clear…

but I do believe this is better.

Because isn't this really the way we all desire to live?

To trust God… even when we don’t understand?

To follow Him… even when we don’t see the path?

To move forward… even when we don’t know where we’re going?

Jeremiah 17:7-8 paints this picture beautifully:

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.

It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.

It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

That’s the kind of faith I want.

Not the kind that only stands when life is predictable.

Not the kind that only trusts when the outcome makes sense.

But the kind that remains steady…

even when everything feels uncertain.

I think about Abram in Genesis 12.

God simply told him:

"Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you."

— Genesis 12:1

That’s it.

No map.

No timeline.

No detailed plan.

Just… go.

And Abram did.

I have to admit something.

I love the stories where the great ones fall and are redeemed.

I really do.

Because those stories remind me that God still uses imperfect people.

They help me believe that if God did it for them… He can do it for me.

They give me comfort and hope.

And yes… I need that.

But there’s something different about the ones who didn’t question.

The ones who simply followed.

Their faith was so big…

Their trust so deep…

And when I read their stories, I feel something else.

A little conviction… yes.

But also something powerful.

Inspiration.

Because suddenly I realize…

That kind of faith is possible.

Not just for them.

For me.

For you.

We can learn to trust God when we don’t understand.

We can follow Him when we don’t see the full picture.

We can walk forward in faith, even when uncertainty surrounds us.

Because the ultimate preparation for life…

Isn’t knowing what’s coming.

It’s knowing the One who does.

So today…

Instead of asking God to show you every step…

Ask Him to strengthen your faith.

Ask Him to deepen your trust.

Ask Him to prepare your heart for whatever lies ahead.

Because when your faith is rooted in Him…

Uncertainty doesn’t shake you.

It grows you.

Thought for Today:

True preparation is trusting God before you know where He is leading.

Prayer:

Lord, help me trust You even when I don’t understand. Strengthen my faith and prepare my heart to follow wherever You lead. Amen.
